Stewart Newman

May 25, 1924 — September 26, 2017

Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 30th at 1:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens for Stewart Newman, age 93, who passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at The Carpenter House in Lafayette. A celebration of his life will follow at the residence of his son, Ron Newman in Carencro.

Major Newman, a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, was a native of Chetek, Wisconsin and the middle child of Frank and Myrtle Newman. The family moved to Jefferson, Wisconsin when Stewart was a sophomore in high school, where he graduated from Jefferson High School in 1942.

Stewart volunteered for service in the Navy immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor and entered the Navy’s flight training program. After assignments at several training facilities, he was assigned to flight training at Glenview Naval Air Station just outside of Chicago, Illinois. As he neared the end of his journey for those gold wings, a curve ball was thrown his way. We all know that falling in love is not a planned event; it doesn’t send an invitation or request a RSVP; nor does it give you time to prepare. It just shows up unannounced. So, maybe it was divine intervention or merely a fortunate stroke of serendipity, but out of the blue, his path happened to converge with the path of a beautiful Cajun WAVE, Seaman First Class Carrie Fuselier, at the base bowling alley on the night of May 23, 1945. Instantly he was smitten and on October 15 of that same year they tied the knot—a beautifully tied knot that lasted 65 years.

After leaving the Navy in 1947 and spending a short time in civilian life, Stewart and Carrie jointly decided he should become a career officer in the Army. So, he entered the Army Officer Candidate Regiment at Fort Riley, Kansas on January 1948 and graduated on May 14, 1948. During his career, they were fortunate to spend most of their lives traveling the globe; five states and two foreign countries, Japan and Germany, finally settling in Carencro in 2006.

Survivors include his one daughter, Rena Sutton and her husband, Charles “Juicy” Sutton, of Reserve, LA; three sons, Bob and his wife, Jacque of Baton Rouge, Ron and his wife, Paula, of Carencro, and Donnie of Gulfport, MS; seven grandchildren, Stacy Newman DePascal, Jennifer Newman Ewing, Candace Keller, Brad Newman, Lacy Ann Sutton, Stacy Lynn Louque, Chelsea Rena Sutton; nine great grandchildren, Devin DePascal, Derin Gutentag, Alexis Breaux, Alyssa Ewing, Mia Ewing, Lilly Lytel, Liam Johnson, Blaze Louque, and one on the way, Baylee Logue and one future great great DePascal grandchild on the way.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Newman, his parents, Frank and Myrtle Newman; one sister, Phyllis Newman Anderson; and one brother, Frankie Newman.

A heartfelt appreciation is extended by the Newman Family to the nurses and staff of St. Joseph Hospice and The Carpenter House, also Rosewood Assisted Living for their kindness, compassion, and gentle care given to him during his time of need.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in memory of Stewart Newman to St. Joseph Hospice foundation, 923 West Pinhook Road Lafayette, Louisiana 70503.
