Lilly Mae Fontenot

Lilly Mae Fontenot, 91, of Scott, LA, went peacefully to her heavenly home on September 11, 2026. Funeral services will be on Monday, September 14, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. in the Sunrise Chapel at Walters Funeral Home. Interment will be immediately following the service at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Scott.

Visitation hours will be observed on Monday, September 14, 2026 at Walters Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 3:00 p.m. A rosary will be prayed on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Lilly was born on April 24, 1935 to Lessin and Andrea Fontenot. She was raised on the family farm in Rayne, LA, alongside her numerous siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Elia Sonnier, Hazel Trahan, Loretta Hanks, Annabelle Fontenot and Andrus Fontenot. Until her final days, Lilly shared a special bond with her sister, Mary Fontenot Broussard. Even though they were separated by the Louisiana-Texas state line, they never missed their 6 p.m. phone call, filled with reminiscing and a little gossiping.

Lilly became a devoted wife to the late Wilbert Guilbeaux on October 13, 1952. Together, they went on to raise three children: Darral, David, and Faye. In 1989, Lilly Mae met her companion, James “Jim” Grimmett. Both retired and ready for new adventures, they spent 29 wonderful years traveling, gardening, cooking, playing cards, and taking morning walks at Northgate Mall.

Lilly worked in the banking industry, and retired after 27 years of service. She was also a faithful parishioner at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, where her faith was an important part of her life.

She found joy in the simple things in life. She took great pride in caring for her home, her flower beds, and the people she loved. If she wasn’t in her flower bed pulling weeds or behind her sewing machine, she was in the kitchen baking. Lilly especially enjoyed seeing the excitement on people’s faces when she brought them a homemade birthday cake and chocolate sandwiches. She was also known for her annual Christmas tradition of handing out 8x10 Christmas bags filled with 15 pounds of homemade goodies, including cookies, fig loaf, banana bread, brownies, trash mix, and popcorn balls.

Lilly’s family will forever treasure the memories of her laughter, her brutal honesty, her cooking, her beautiful flowers, and, most of all, the love and faith she gave so freely to those around her. She was deeply loved and will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her three children and their families: son, Darral J. Guilbeaux and wife, Becky; son, David Guilbeaux and wife, Debbie; and daughter, Faye Grimmett and husband, Garnet “NAP”; four granddaughters, Jennifer and Dr. Peter Van Duzee and their sons, Cole, Dawson, and Sawyer; Allison and Charlie Dugan and their children, Nola Mullins, Abigail Dugan, and Natalie Sonnier; April and Ryann Melancon and their children, Austin and Lizzie Domingue, and their baby on the way, Devin Domingue and Emalee Lanclos, Layne Domingue, Rielynn Melancon and Maria Terrasa Bornay; and Christina and Steven Comeaux and their daughters Camille, Lillian, Jolie and Mallory; six grandsons, Neil and Grace Guilbeaux and their son, Brayden; Mark Guilbeaux; James and Joanie Grimmett and their children, Evelyn and Levi; Mike Reed and Dawn Castille and his sons, Isaiah and wife Kate, Elliot, and Dylan; Jason Reed and Dana Sonnier; and Max and Taylor Reed and their children Emery, Oscar and Oliver. Also surviving Lilly are her sister, Mary Fontenot Broussard, her godchild Leslie Hanks, and Jamie Fontenot who she shared a special bond with.

Preceding her in death are Adras and Adeze Guilbeaux, Jeston Guilbeaux, Peggy Guilbeaux, Nick Broussard, Todd Broussard, Percy Hanks, and Rose Fontenot.

Pallbearers will be James Grimmett, Mark Guilbeaux, Neil Guilbeaux, Dr. Pete Van Duzee, Ryann Melancon, and Max Reed.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Camelot of Broussard Assisted Living (including the many new friends she made there, especially Mildred Alexander), A Care Partners, and Allegiance Healthcare for the care, compassion, and support provided during Lilly’s final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital and the Autism Society.
