A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at 1:30 pm in St. Genevieve Church for Pierre J. Fortier, 87, who passed away May 2, 2015. Father Kenneth Domingue, pastor of St. Leo the Great Curch in Leonville, La. and Father Brian Taylor, pastor of St. Genevieve Church in Lafayette, will con-celebrate the funeral Mass and conduct the funeral services. Lectors will be Leo Fremin and Carl Comeaux; gift bearers will be Christian and Kaitlyn Fortier. Jodi Bollich, organist and soloist will perform, "Precious Lord, Take My Hand", "Psalm 23: Shepherd Me, Oh God", "Ave Maria", "Panis Angelicus", and "J'irai la voir un Jour". Interment will follow the mass in Calvary Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Leonce (Mary "Teta" Comeaux) Fortier of Hood River, Ore., and Joachim (Tonya Duhon) Fortier of Lafayette; two sisters, Marie Helene Boudreau of Quebec and Sr. Marie Pauline Fortier of Ontario; one brother, Louis Phillip Fortier of British Columbia; two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Christian Fortier of Lafayette; and two beloved nieces, Francine Fortier-Theberge and Sara Melancon Haynes.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Sonnier Fortier; his parents, Polycarpe and Adelia Fortier; and six brothers.
Pierre was a native of St. Isidore, Canada and resident of Lafayette for 61 years. He was a veteran of the Canadian Special Forces, and trained with the United States 82nd Airborne Division to become a paratrooper. He and his wife Juanita owned and operated the Jefferson Conoco Filling Station, now the converted, popular downtown eatery. In his free time, he enjoyed his role as an adult leader in the Boy Scouts of America.
Pallbearers will be Leonce Fortier, Joachim Fortier, Olivier Chatelain, Scott Campbell, Phillip Haynes, and Joe Pisano. Honorary pallbearers include Christian Fortier and Benjamin Hernandez.
The family requests that visitation be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 from 3:00-8:00 pm; and resume Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at 9:00 am until time of service. A rosary will be led by Father Domingue Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
