Shirley Roberts

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at 10:00 am in the Sunrise Chapel at Walters Funeral Home for Shirley B. Roberts, 77, who passed away on August 28, 2012. Father Brian Taylor, pastor of St. Genevieve Catholic Church, will officiate the mass and conduct the funeral service. Jodi Bollich, organist and soloist, will perform "Amazing Grace", "I Can Only Imagine", "Panis Angelicus", and "His Eye Is On The Sparrow". Summer Viator and Pam Abshire will serve as lectors, and giftbearers will be Norma Olivier and Annie Meche. Following the Mass, interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
Shirley was born on January 9, 1935 to Dolza and Nita Bertrand in Gueydan, LA. She lived most of her life in Lafayette, and worked as a receptionist in the medical field.
She is survived by two daughters, Sabrina Roberts of Seattle, WA and Kelli Hemsell (Robert) of Lafayette; one stepson, Calvin Roberts (Paula) of Breaux Bridge; one stepdaughter, Genevieve Balser of Sorrento, FL; three sisters, Wanda Moore (Chester) of Sumrall, MS, Marian Bertrand of Gueydan, and Judy Abshire (Donald) of Lafayette; one brother, Lawrence "Manny" Bertrand (Leona) of Gueydan; one granddaughter, Summer Viator (Zachary) of Broussard; eight stepgrandchildren, Jeramie Roberts, Adam Roberts, Jimmy Hemsell, Bobby Hemsell, Jolie Roberts, Jennifer Balser, Karen Balser, and Emily Balser; one great-granddaughter, Ryleigh Viator; and four step great-grandchildren, Piper Hemsell, Rajko Hemsell, Violet Hemsell and Owen Hemsell.
She was preceded in death by husband, Angelas John "AJ" Roberts, Jr.; her parents, Dolza and Nita Bertrand; her stepson, Jerry Roberts; and her step-grandson, Anthony John Roberts.
Pallbearers will be Dustin Abshire, Troy Abshire, Zachary Viator, Donald Abshire, Calvin Roberts, and James Elliott; honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Hemsell, Bobby Hemsell and Robert Hemsell.
The family requests that visitation be held Friday, August 31, 2012 from 3:00-9:00 pm at Walters Funeral Home, and resume on Saturday morning at 8:00 am until time of service. A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 pm Friday evening, led by Elizabeth Pavy and Pamela Abshire.
